On Wednesday, June 27, 2012, APD announced new initiatives that will help tackle traffic safety and the rising fatality rate.
Topics discussed include:
• APD’s Pedestrian Enforcement Safety Team (PEST) stepped up initiative. The PEST initiative began in October 2011 and will run through October 2012. The goal of this initiative is to bring awareness and change behavior to pedestrian and motorists by three approaches: enforcement, education and engineering.
• Operation Summer Sundays, which began June 24, 2012 and will run through Sept. 1, 2012. The goal of this operation will be to reduce the number of fatal crashes on Sunday nights by 50 percent during the summer months.
• Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS), which is a crime reduction program that increases traffic safety and reduces crime within regions using detailed crime data and data analysis.
