The Austin Parks and Recreation Department will begin renovation work at the Fannie Davis Gazebo the week of January 2, 2012. The gazebo is located on the hike and bike trail at Lady Bird Lake, north of the S. First Street and Riverside Drive intersection. The project is expected to have minimal impact to trail users, aside from light construction traffic crossing the trail. The Department will be posting project identification and trail construction signage.
The Fannie Davis Gazebo was originally built by the Women in Construction in 1970. Enhancements to the Auditorium Shores Trailhead area where the Fannie Davis Gazebo resides is currently being considered under the Master Plan update at Town Lake Park - Auditorium Shores / Butler Park. The Gazebo renovation project is an investigation, engineering and restoration of the existing wood-frame structure, including replacement of structural beams, a new roof, repainting and electrical/lighting improvements.
The landscaping (removal of invasive species and riparian restoration) and pond associated with the Fannie Davis Gazebo is under consideration as part of the Master Plan update. Completion of the construction phase is projected in March 2012.
