We are repairing and stabilizing the Barton Springs bypass tunnel, which has begun to deteriorate. Left unrepaired, its condition will continue to worsen and could make the pool an unpleasant and dangerous place to swim.
The tunnel is a concrete box culvert, located just under the sidewalk on the north side of Barton Springs Pool. It runs from the shallow end of the pool to just beyond the dam at the deep end. This tunnel allows both the normal flow in Barton Creek and frequent small floods to bypass the swimming area between the two dams, protecting the water quality of the pool.
Unfortunately, we must close the pool for two of the three construction phases. To minimize the inconvenience, the work is taking place in the fall and winter.
