I just wanted to pass on my warmest thanks to the Austin Police Department for their help and support during the marathon. They are so wonderful every year but this year, they truly made a difference. The race organizer had a staff member who harassed participants, telling them they wouldn't finish and that they had to get in his van and forfeit their race. This was well before the race ended. While I understand traffic concerns, I've been in races across the country and always been slow (I'm a finisher not a winner) and never been harassed. The police stepped up into role of motivators and protectors and followed the last few hundreds cheerfully and without one discouraging word. They made me proud to call Austin home. I saw police officers step in and support participants who felt so discouraged by the race organization and I had one officer ride beside me when he saw that stupid van follow dangerously close, which he was. I just wanted to say that these officers who worked that day gave something back that could have been taken away.
