Refreshing changes are coming to restaurants and shops at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Inside the Barbara Jordan Terminal, customers soon will discover fantastic renovations of old favorites, and complete change outs of some concessions and brands.
ThunderCloud Subs sandwich shop has closed temporarily, while neighboring Ruta Maya Coffee Company operates a kiosk between Gates 6 and 7 in front of construction walls – as both undergo store renovations.
More local flavor is on the way with Second Bar + Kitchen. This downtown Austin favorite will open a new location by Gate 6. The kitchen’s Congress Burger was recently named No. 2 Greatest Burgers in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine. They also offer small plates for sharing, locally-recognized salads, delicious pizzas, entrees and desserts. From the bar are finely crafted cocktails, an approachable wine program and eclectic beers.
ThunderCloud will remain closed during the renovation period. The restaurant that started as a local Austin neighborhood sub shop in 1975 will reopen with Ruta Maya near Gate 18 by the end of 2016. Ruta Maya, an organic coffee specialty shop founded in Austin in 1990 also has a kiosk at Gate 18, near the current Longhorns Store kiosk.
Coffee locations abundant at Austin airport
Though concession renovation work is ongoing throughout the Barbara Jordan Terminal, coffee options remain plentiful. Cuvee self-serve kiosk is near Gate 5. Annie’s Cafe & Bar offers coffee and espresso near Gate 18. Austin Java is near Gate 14 and has a self-serve coffee kiosk at Gate 10. Pre-security, there is Fara Cafe serving Fara brand coffee and SoCo Market serving Cuvee. Other vendors provide regular servings of coffee on menus.
Gate 4 transformation continues with walkway mounting
Building cranes are coming and going near Gate 4. The mounting of the elevated jet bridges to support stands underway readies the four extended walkways for gate bridges that are growing eastward from the terminal, allowing for construction of the nine-gate expansion to begin. Expanding the airport apron for jet movement, parking and services continues outside the eastern side of the terminal.
Renovations to South Terminal begins
Gutting and interior demolition at the South Terminal by LoneStar Airport Holdings, LLC is underway. Workers are busily renovating the terminal that dates back to the original Bergstrom Air Force Base. Upgrades include modernizing three gates, adding eight check in counters, a TSA check point, check-baggage screening and a baggage claim area. The new and improved $12 million budget South Terminal is slated to open in early 2017. Renderings show a retro interior style design for the 30,000 square-foot facility with an exterior featuring white canopies. Located on the south side of the airport, the South Terminal will have a separate customer entrance and parking for passengers. More at http://www.austintexas.gov/department/south-terminal
