Over the past few years the City has begun to see an increased cost associated with the ever growing need for more data storage. This can be directly attributed to the increased use of data to drive critical business decisions, new retention laws and the implementation of in-car digital video cameras in all Austin Police Department patrol vehicles.
Traditional storage solutions used by the City have relied on Storage Array Networks that have many limitations as the amount of data grows. To overcome these current storage limitations, City IT had to develop a new storage strategy. City IT partnered with Freeit Data Solutions Inc. and together they worked with Caringo to implement an on premise Private Cloud storage solution. This solution utilizes Caringo Object Based Storage software suite and non-vendor specific hardware. Object Based Storage manages data as objects as opposed to file systems and block storage. Each object includes the data, metadata and a unique identifier to make sure the object is easily accessible.
The top benefit to Object Based Storage is lower cost as compared to traditional storage infrastructure. Utilizing this solution the City will save between 50% and 60% on storage costs. Another benefit is the use of data-tiering which routes data to various tiers of data storage, allowing you to align the value of your data and the cost of storing it.
The use of Object Based Storage has initially been implemented for public safety systems and will be expanded to other City departments over the next several years.
