The site's taxonomy (the vocabulary used to create department menus, among other things) creates the editorial sections, which are governed by permissions via roles and user accounts. Users are assigned to specific editorial sections (i.e., their department), and their editorial permissions granted by their role(s) will be active within those sections. A single user can be assigned to multiple editorial sections (i.e., multiple departments), but a single user account cannot be assigned a different role per editorial section.
Selecting the Correct Editorial Section when Creating Content
Every content type created requires users to select an editorial section. The most common of these sections includes the home page (the department's name), About, Media, Programs, Divisions, Locations and Services. Selecting one of these editorial sections defines where the page will be "placed." For example, when creating a department page for a specific program, a departmental user would select "Programs" for the editorial section. That page will then show up in the listing of all departmental programs.
The Page Reference field is related to editorial sections in that it tells the system where to put specific items. This field associates items such as contact information, promos, factoids, etc. with pages on the website, so those items will show on the right and left-hand columns of the correct pages.
As an example, if you wanted to add a promo to the ABC program page, then you would select the home page (department name) from the editorial section, type the program name (in this example, ABC) in the Page Reference field, and then wait for a list of options related to what you typed to appear. From there, you can select the correct page title. The system will place a number after the title - this is how you can tell if the system understands what page to use.
Important note: The page reference field ONLY needs to be used when placing items like promos, contact information, etc. on pages that are not specifically listed in the editorial section box. Therefore, if you want to place one of those items on the Home, About or Media page, you can simply select any of those items from the editorial section and leave the Page Reference field blank.
However, if you want to place an item on a specific program or division page, those aren't specifically listed in the editorial section box, so you must select the home page (department name) from the editorial section and then use the page reference field to find the specific page title.
