The City of Austin was recognized today with the Community Stewardship Award by Envision Central Texas for its work on the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP). The work prioritized transportation projects based on a model that blends mobility needs with community values. The prioritization model was used to develop the November 2010 Mobility Bond approved by voters. The $90 million package includes both short-term and long-term investments that address City mobility issues in streets, sidewalks, bike paths, trails, and transit infrastructure in all parts of Austin. “The City’s goal is to create a comprehensive and responsive community-driven approach to the major transportation challenges facing the City and Central Texas. The Strategic Mobility Plan was initiated to promote smart, strategic mobility investments and leverage resources to create sustainable transportation systems,” said Austin City Manager Marc A. Ott. A key element of Envision Central Texas’ (ECT) vision is having an effective transportation system that improves mobility throughout the region, increasing choices of how we get around- including roads, rail, trails and bikeways- and is coordinated with land use planning. “Our city and region’s transportation challenges are dynamic in nature, and we will need to be responsive to “It’s great to be recognized for this effort, yet there is much work ahead to address our city and region’s transportation challenges,” said Rob Spillar, Austin Transportation Department. Envision Central Texas is a non-profit organization composed of a diverse group of citizens, including neighborhood, environmental, business leaders and policy makers, who share the common goal of addressing growth sensibly with the interests of the region's citizens in mind.
