The City of Austin is no longer accepting applications for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant. The grant funds are expended.

We are in the process of reviewing all applications submitted, and are exploring how we can use additional federal and local funds to offer assistance for small businesses, start-up companies, entrepreneurs, creatives, and non-profit organizations.

The Austin City Council approved Resolution 20200507-023 on May 7, 2020 to designate $1 million for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant (formerly the Childcare Support Fund). The Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant provides immediate and equitably-focused one-time financial assistance to eligible childcare centers, including family childcare home providers. Eligible childcare providers must be able to demonstrate an economic loss associated with COVID-19 and must be located in a City of Austin Council district.

Applicants may apply for grants up to $50,000 toward payroll, rent relief, operational costs, and other eligible COVID-19 related expenses.

The Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant can reimburse for eligible expenses made between March 1, 2020 and the time of application submission. Expenses must be documented with receipts, invoices, cancelled checks, list of active employees, personnel salary/wages, agreements (e.g., lease agreements), and similar records. The total grant award is determined by the total of eligible receipts and other documentation uploaded with the submitted application. Screen shots of these receipts are acceptable forms of submission. Acceptable file formats to upload as receipts documentation include: PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XSLX, PNG, JPG, JPEG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to repay the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant?

No. This is a grant program with no expectation of repayment. 

Are there reporting requirements of the grantees? 

The application requires documentation of eligible expenses for reimbursement. Providing this documentation satisfies the reporting requirements for this grant.

Am I guaranteed to receive funds if my business is eligible for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant?

No. We expect demand to exceed the $1 million available in this program. The program will accept applications until all funds are expended or October 1, 2020, whichever comes first.

May I apply for each childcare center I own? 

Yes, you can complete one application and list each center separately including the location address, number of CCS enrolled children, and number of direct care staff for each eligible center.  

Am I eligible for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant if I received a Childcare Stabilization Grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) or other grants funded by the CARES Act?  

Yes, however you cannot submit the same expenses for reimbursement to multiple grants.

Am I eligible to receive the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant if I'm seeking other funds?

Yes, but again, expenses that were covered by the CARES act (PPP) cannot be submitted for payment under the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant.

Does the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant affect forgivability of any federal Paycheck Protection Program funds that were received from the U.S. Small Business Administration? 

No. Receiving the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant will not affect the forgivability of Federal Paycheck Protection Program funds. 

Is this application available in multiple languages?  

Yes. This application is also available in Spanish.

Will I get confirmation that my application has been received?  

Yes. Applicants will receive a confirmation email at the address provided in the application. The confirmation email will include information about next steps. Please check your spam folder if you cannot locate your confirmation email.

When should I expect to hear an update about my application?

Within three (3) business days from the date you submitted your application.

What are the next steps if my grant application is approved? 

Funds will be direct deposited into the bank account provided in the application within seven (7) business days from United Way’s approval of your application.

What restrictions will be placed on the funds granted?

These funds are a reimbursement for eligible expenses made between March 1, 2020 and the date of your application and for which Federal funds have not been received. There are no further restrictions.   

Are early applications given any priority in funding allocations?

Applications will be funded in the order they are received, so you are encouraged to submit your application and receipts/documentation as soon as possible.

What will United Way do with my information? 

The City of Austin contract with United Way requires them not to disclose or use application data and to retain confidentiality of the application data. 

What are the date ranges for expenses eligible for reimbursement?  

Eligible expenses that you paid between March 1, 2020 and date of application can be considered for reimbursement as long as they were not previously reimbursed by another grant.

Can I still request reimbursement for rent or mortgage payments if they were deferred?  

 

If a business or organization can document that a rent or mortgage payment that would have been due between March 1, 2020 and date of application has been deferred but is still due on a date in the future, that rent or mortgage payment is eligible for reimbursement. Rent or mortgage payments after March 1 that have been forgiven and are not required to be paid at a future date are not eligible for reimbursement. 

Note: Homebased childcare providers can request rent/mortgage reimbursement only up to the same percentage of the home that is claimed as an IRS deduction.
