Bicycles are an important part of Austin’s transportation system. To keep the roads safe for everyone, the State of Texas Transportation Code applies to cyclists and drivers alike.
Chapter 551 of the Transportation Code provides that bicycle riders must obey all traffic laws applicable to vehicle operators. It also contains provisions about the way a bicycle should be ridden and the safety equipment that should be on a bicycle. Officers of the Austin Police Department will issue citations for these violations in the same manner as they do for motor vehicle violations. These are criminal violations and the citations are filed at this Court. Convictions on these violations are reported to the Department of Public Safety and some of them become part of an individual’s driving record.
