Weed and Seed is a community-based strategy sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). It is an innovative, comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention and community revitalization.
There are currently more than 250 weed and seed sites nationwide. The Central East Austin Weed and Seed was officially recognized in 2005 by the DOJ. The site, which is now in its third year, is eligible to receive funding for up to five years to administer the weed and seed strategy, which is a two-pronged approach:
-
Law enforcement agencies and prosecutors cooperate in "weeding out" criminal activity from the designated area
-
"Seeding" brings prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood revitalization services to the area
Program boundaries are defined by:
-
Interstate 35 and Chicon to the west
-
Northwestern, Chestnut and Miriam Avenue to the east
-
East 11th and 12th Streets to the south
-
East 12th Street and Martin Luther King Blvd. to the north
