The first phase of improvements at Dove Springs District Park is a playscape replacement. The park was originally built in the 1990s and the playscape component has aged, become obsolete by current standards, and identified for replacement. Included in this scope are nature pathways with nodes of discovery along the pathway.

Work anticipated in the Playscape and pathway areas includes;

  • Demolition of outdated equipment
  • Site re-grading
  • Utility and drainage improvements
  • Accessibility enhancements
  • Irrigation and planting improvements
  • Pathway improvements
  • Shrub thinning & Tree planting
  • Signage & way finding
  • Site furnishings & amenities

Project Background

Stakeholder meeting opportunities have progressed over the last several years for the Dove Springs area in a cooperative project with Robin Moore, The Nature Learning Initiative (NLI) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). An early stakeholder charette in February of 2012 was held with PARD and in April of 2012, PARD produced and led a children’s participatory charette. Three models were produced with this charette and are incorporated into the overall inspiration and scope of the Playscape renovations. The Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) in collaboration with the Austin Parks Foundation (APF) have formed a pilot partnership to actively lead the design and installation of an innovative playscape and nature pathways for Dove Springs District Park. This focused effort is the result of a St. David’s grant award to APF and with the assistance of third party consultants; the innovative design will be a custom piece to reinvigorate the community in active participation and involvement in the outdoor environment. This initiative is part of a larger intensive collaboration to spearhead physical fitness and healthy lifestyles in the community.

Public Engagement

The public engagement phase of this project is complete and construction is anticipated to begin early summer 2014. Previous public meetings are as follows:
