All firefighter cadets participate in the 28-week course (Monday through Friday 7am-5pm), which includes intense physical training and a challenging academic program. The utilization of Team Leaders, incumbant firefighters who volunteer to mentor and assist cadets, provide cadets with any needed one-on-one guidance to succeed. 

Upon graduation from the Fire Academy, Cadets will be state-certified basic firefighters and emergency technicians (EMT-B). Cadets are next required to complete a 6 month probationary period while working on shift, at an assigned station. While on probation, Cadets receive addtional training on AFD Policies and skills specific to the Austin Fire Department.
