License and Weights

With the recent rapid growth of the City of Austin area, there has been a substantial increase in commercial motor vehicle traffic. The License & Weight team was created to enforce local, state, and federal laws as they apply to the operation of commercial motor vehicles as well as traffic enforcement and collisions on all the high-speed roadways within the city limits of Austin.

In 1993 the Austin Police Department created a single License & Weight unit consisting of six Officers and one Sergeant. Currently there are two units consisting of fourteen certified License & Weight Officers and two Sergeants. There are numerous major roadways throughout the City of Austin. Interstate 35 is the main highway through Austin and has been designated the emergency and the Hazardous Material route. The License & Weight Unit has the responsibility of the enforcement of commercial motor traffic including the transportation of Hazardous Material on the roadways in the City of Austin. This includes but is not limited to enforcement of laws regulating the weight of commercial motor vehicles and safety regulations on commercial motor vehicles as described in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 49 and in the Texas Traffic Laws. With the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the continued growth of Austin the uniform enforcement of these laws and regulations will help ensure safety for the citizens of Austin and will help protect the integrity of the roadways in the City of Austin.
