Firefighters have a wide range of responsibilities, not only to hone the skills required of firefighting, but also for the upkeep of the fire station, equipment, and all the apparatus. All firefighters work rotating shifts of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. Everyday activities firefighters engage in include:
- Maintaining fire station
- Participate in mandatory fitness and conditioning program
- Daily training drills
- Attend continuing education classes for EMT and Fire Certifications
- Maintenance of all apparatus
- Maintenance of all equipment
- Inventory of supplies
- Territory schools
- Fire safety inspections
- Public education assignments
- Hydrant flow testing and inspections
Every activity is important and given attention. A fire truck cannot respond to an emergency if it is low on fuel. A facemask can cause a serious injury if it has a crack in it. A firefighter’s entire day is spent, in one way or another, preparing for emergencies.
