Police Training Academy

The Austin Police Training Academy is located at the Public Safety Training Campus (PSTC), a 24-acre tract in southeast Austin near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The daily hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Academic Requirements and Structure

The academy is 32 weeks long. The academic structure of the class includes 1,280 hours of instruction, 618 of which are hours required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).

Physical Training (PT) Program

The PSTC has developed a rigorous PT program to assist cadets with improving their muscular strength and endurance, as well as their cardio-respiratory ability. Cadets are strenuously trained, and applicants are expected to arrive at the PSTC at a certain level of fitness.

Cadets are physically assessed twice during the training academy at defined intervals before they undertake a final assessment near the completion of the training program. The requirements are:

  • A 300-meter run in 63 seconds or less
  • 33 or more pushups (un-timed)
  • 36 or more sit ups in one minute
  • A vertical jump of 17 inches
  • A 1.5 mile run in 13:05 or less

Please note: The training campus is not a live-in facility. You are required to live close enough to commute to and from the training campus, enabling you to make it on time to classes.
