Permits must be obtained before erecting or constructing a tent in the City of Austin. The COA Building Department issues these permits, which are called temporary use permits, but the Austin Fire Department also must review the request and sign off on it.
AFD examines the dimensions of the tent, its intended use, presence of fire extinguishers, clearance from a heat source or flame, location of parked vehicles, etc. AFD uses the same form that is used for Open Burning Permits, but additional paperwork will be required and the permit will actually by issued from the Department of Planning and Development Review (PPDR).
