We develop and implement policies, programs and capital improvement projects that support two of the Watershed Protection Department's missions - water quality protection and erosion control (i.e., stream restoration).
We maintain Austin’s stormwater conveyance system, a network of creeks, engineered channels, pipes and stormwater ponds. By inspecting, cleaning, repairing and constructing drainage systems, we help reduce flooding, erosion and water pollution.
Watershed Engineering’s mission is to protect lives and property from the devastating effects of flooding. Flash flooding is Austin’s top weather-related emergency. Floods in Austin continue to take lives and can cause millions of dollars in damage.
In addition to planning efforts, the Watershed Planning Division ushers new or updated rules and ordinances through the stakeholder process, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and supports the department’s GIS functions.
