Take a Loved One for a Check-up

Saturday, September 22, 2018 - 10:00am to 1:00pm

Take a Loved One for a Checkup Day encourages people of color and all citizens to see a health care professional or make an appointment in the near future.  Austin Public Health’s Health Equity Unit is sponsoring a free community health fair to promote greater awareness of the importance of regular doctor visits and health screenings. Free health screenings at the event will include blood sugar, blood pressure, and pregnancy testing, as well as HIV/STI testing. Flu vaccinations will also be given.

Chronic Illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease continue to affect our communities at an alarming rate.  Cancer and heart disease account for 36% of death in Hispanics, and among African Americans cancer and heart disease are the leading cause of death.  Asians are seven times more likely to have Type II Diabetes than the general population.  Barriers to regular care like access, language, literacy, or being uninsured or underinsured cause many people to wait until there is an emergency before they go for a checkup.  Take a Loved One for a Checkup Day is an excellent way to screen individuals, and where necessary, refer them for follow up care.  Early detection and prevention can enhance the quality of life and extend the lives of people of color in our community.
