City of Austin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release Date: Feb. 17, 2018
Contact: Contact: Public Information Office     512-974-5017    Email

Don't give rides to strangers or leave a running vehicle unattended.

The APD Auto Theft Unit has received more than a dozen reports of a scam since the beginning of the year in which teenage Hispanic females (often in pairs, but occasionally alone) solicite rides to nearby locations from primarily Spanish-speaking men. They often request to be taken to a gas station or store to use the location as a ploy to get the drivers out of the vehicle before fleeing with it.

We want to encourage people to protect themselves. Never give rides to strangers or leave running vehicles unattended.

Natalia Lee, the APD Auto Theft Neighborhood Liaison, is available for interviews in both English and Spanish tomorrow at 11 a.m. Please RSVP to the APD Public Information Office if you plan to attend the briefing.
