Austin Water will honor four organizations for excellence in water conservation during an awards ceremony on Friday, March 25, 2016 at 1:30 PM at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center at 600 River Street.
These organizations were chosen for innovative conservation practices, consumer education and advocacy to conserve water.
Home Builders Association of Greater Austin
The Home Builders Association of Greater Austin worked with Austin Water to develop “Sensible Landscapes for Central Texas – A Guide for Home Builders and Homeowners” this publication provides guidelines for water efficient lawns and landscapes suitable for Central Texas.
Applied Materials, Inc.
Applied Materials, Inc. installed a system that recycles more than six million gallons a year of process water used in the manufacture of semiconductors. The recycled water is used for a variety of non-potable water needs including makeup water for two 850 ton cooling towers.
University of Texas at Austin
The University of Texas at Austin has implemented a number of innovative irrigation system upgrades including a new automated central irrigation computer control system that has reduced irrigation usage by 66 percent and saved 90 to 100 million gallons of water annually.
Interfaith Environmental Network of Austin
The Interfaith Environmental Network of Austin (IEN) is a coalition of individuals and congregations from a variety of faiths in Austin committed to environmental stewardship. IEN offers free classes and hosts monthly symposiums on water and energy efficiency, sustainability and environmental stewardship. The group worked with Austin Water to distribute and install high efficiency aerators and showerheads in area churches and synagogues.
