Attendance will be limited to 750 patrons after 8:30 p.m.
The next Barton Springs "Howl at the Moon" event is Monday June 17, 2019.
The Barton Springs Pool “Howl at the Moon” event (aka Full Moon Swim) attendance will be limited to 750 patrons after 8:30 p.m.. Attendees will also need to pay the standard Barton Springs Pool entry fee (e.g., $5.00 for adult residents).
Every full moon, hundreds of Austinites descend on Barton Springs Pool, crane their necks to the sky, and howl at the moon. As Austin's population has grown, so too has the attendance for what started out as a small, community organized family-friendly event. During previous events during summer months attendance has topped 2,500 individuals. This resulted in a number of safety concerns such as obstructed walkways and noise levels that impeded lifeguard duties.
In the summer of 2017, the Parks and Recreation Department implemented new rules at Barton Springs Pool’s “Howl at the Moon” event to help ensure the safety of participants and to preserve an enjoyable event for those in attendance. To help ensure the public's safety the following items will be implemented again this year (2019):
Standard entry fee will be extended past 9:00 PM for full moon events;
Entrants will be limited to 750 after 8:30 PM;
Additional law enforcement will be on hand to assist with crowd control;
Post-event evaluations are available to determine opportunities for improvement.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department understands the importance of preserving the integrity of this community tradition and is working to balance the nostalgia of the past with the current public safety concerns associated with the event’s evolution. Any additional changes will be announced prior to upcoming events.
