The City of Austin currently has several road reconstruction, utility improvement, and maintenance projects occurring in the downtown area affecting access to the Central Library located at 800 Guadalupe Street. These include:
8th Street Reconstruction Project
The 8th Street Reconstruction project is currently under construction from San Antonio Street to Colorado Street. The contractor is installing a new bus stop on Guadalupe and working on utilities and road reconstruction on 8th from Colorado to San Antonio. On October 15, the contractor will move to the north east corner of Guadalupe. The contractor will continue work on the north side of 8th Street through late November from Guadalupe to Colorado. They will then move on the south side of 8th Street from Lavaca to Colorado.
Guadalupe Maintenance Work
The Public Works Department is also currently performing routine maintenance on Guadalupe, from Cesar Chavez to MLK (100 block to 1800 block). Work is expected to continue through October 1 (date is approximate). The maintenance work consists of grinding off the old asphalt ("milling") and then repaving with fresh, new asphalt. The work is being done in 3-4 block sections with two lanes closed at all times. No parking is allowed in the work section from 7am to 5pm. Meters and signs will be covered to signify "no parking". The street and all driveways will remain open to traffic with the addition of flaggers directing traffic in the active work zones.
Beginning Sept. 25, the Public Works Department will perform similar work on Lavaca from Cesar Chavez to MLK. This work is expected to last until Oct. 18. Both Guadalupe and Lavaca have utility projects underway by other agencies and contractors. Those utility jobs are not related to the City’s work.
Parking on Guadalupe Street is currently not available due to these construction activities. Parking is available on 9th Street and in the library patron lot north of the library building.Sidewalks on 8th Street on the south side of the building and those on Guadalupe on the east side of the building are currently closed. Citizens are asked to use the sidewalk on the east side of Guadalupe and use the crosswalk at 9th to reach the library main entrance and avoid crossing Guadalupe mid-block between 8th and 9th Streets.
