The Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Institute for Colored Youth was originally established in 1887 on Bull Creek Road in what was then far north Austin. In 1961, the school was moved to its current site in Southeast Austin. It was desegregated in 1965-1966 following 78 years of academic and residential segregation by race, and began serving as the East Campus of the Texas School for the Deaf. In 2002, the City of Austin purchased the property to develop a campus dedicated to the provision of public health services and animal services.
