Deceased: Tony Ray Green Jr., Black male, D.O.B. 11/9/1996
On Saturday, May 4, 2019, at approximately 2:13 a.m., Austin 9-1-1 received multiple calls of a possible gunshot fired within the Madison at Wells Branch apartment complex, 13601 Elm Ridge Lane. Austin Fire, Austin-Travis County EMS and Austin Police discovered an unresponsive Black male, who was later identified as Tony Ray Green Jr., near building 16 with obvious trauma to his body. Despite life-saving efforts by Fire and EMS, Green succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased at 2:36 a.m. by Dr. Escott.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene and were able to learn through witness statements, that Tony Ray Green Jr. and another unidentified Black male, kicked-in the door to an apartment belonging to a man named David Smith, in an attempt to rob him. After making forced entry into the apartment, Smith shot Green in self-defense. The other unidentified Black male immediately fled the scene.
The Travis County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy that same day and ruled the cause of death a homicide.
Smith was arrested on a Marijuana charge and booked into the Travis County jail. The homicide case had been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
