Deceased: Dunieski Castillo-Leyva, a Hispanic male, (D.O.B 06-25-1974) Arrested: Julian Juan Medrano, Hispanic male, 17 years of age
Austin Homicide detectives have arrested Julian Medrano, 17 years of age for the murder of Dunieski Castillo Leyva. Leyva and two other companions responded to a sexually oriented ad on the Back Page website. Leyva and his companions drove to an apartment located at 2501 Anken Dr. During the transaction, an argument began when services were not received. When Leyva and his companions requested their money be returned a violent argument ensued. Leyva and his companions fled the apartment. Leyva ran to his truck and got into the driver’s seat. He started the truck and began to back out. Medrano who was associated with the apartment ran to the front of Leyva’s truck and fired one round into the vehicle. The bullet struck Leyva killing him. The truck still in gear rolled back striking several vehicles before coming to a stop.
Additional charges against others involved are expected as detectives continue to investigate.

On Sunday, July 9 at approximately 1:12 am, Austin Police officers responded to a shots fired call at 2501 Anken Dr. Upon arrival, officers located Dunieski Castillo-Leyva with obvious trauma to his body in his pickup truck. EMS arrived on scene and administered live saving measures. Leyva was pronounced deceased at the scene at 1:28 am.
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s autopsy determined the cause of death was from a gunshot wound. The manner of death was Homicide.
Homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses and following up on leads.
Based on information currently available, APD does not believe the public is at risk in relation to this incident. No arrests have been made at this time.
