On June 20, 2017, at approximately 9:58 p.m., Austin Police officers responded to a deceased persons call at 200 Prince Dr. Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on scene and evaluated Edgar Carbajal, who was subsequently pronounced deceased at 10:04 p.m. Based on the decedent’s age (26) and the fact that he had been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy from birth, a Homicide detective and a Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office investigator responded to the residence for further investigation. During the on-scene investigation, there were concerns by both investigating entities of severe neglect to the decedent. An autopsy was performed the following day.
On August 29, 2017, the completed autopsy report was obtained by the lead Homicide detective. The official cause of death was ruled as pneumonia caused by bacteremia, due to pressure ulcers from the cerebral palsy. The manner of death was ruled a Homicide. Based on the autopsy findings and interviews, the Homicide unit consulted with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and the criminal charge of Injury to a Disabled Individual by Omission, a 1st Degree Felony, was determined to be the most appropriate charge to file based on the facts of the case.
On September 7, 2017, an arrest warrant was issued for Edgar Carbajal’s mother, Erica Yanet Flores. Flores was arrested for this warrant and booked into the Travis County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
