Deceased: Marques W. Johnson, an African American male, born 03/03/1984
On Sunday, September 17, 2017 at approximately 2:08 a.m. an Austin Police officer was flagged down about a man who had been knocked unconscious. When officers arrived they observed Marques Johnson lying in the street with a crowd formed around him. Officers moved the crowd back and assisted Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services through the crowd to get Johnson on a stretcher. He was then taken to an awaiting ambulance to Dell Seton Medical Center in critical condition. Johnson remained in critical condition until today when he passed away.
Witnesses told police that Marques had exchanged words with an African American male and a Caucasian male who were together. After the verbal exchange, Marques, who was with his wife, turned and walked away. The two men followed Marques. The Caucasian male threw an object at Marques which struck him. Marques stopped and turned to face the men. The African American male then punched Marques who fell to the ground. Both men then ran away.
The suspect who struck Marques is described as:
African American male approximately 25 years of age, 5’10” to 6’. Short curly black hair, blue or light-colored eyes and a beard. He was wearing a light colored shirt with blue jeans.
