Deceased: Marques W. Johnson, an African American male, born 03/03/1984
Nathan Raynard Marshall, Black male, 28 years of age, has been charged with manslaughter, a 2nd degree felony, following a fatal attack on Marques Johnson Sunday, September 17, 2017 at approximately 2:08 a.m. His bond has been set at $100,000.
Marshall was being held in the Travis County Jail for Assault on a Public Servant when he was charged with manslaughter. His bond for that is set at $50,000.
Austin Police were flagged down about a man who had been knocked unconscious. When officers arrived they observed Marques Johnson lying in the street with a crowd formed around him. Officers moved the crowd back and assisted EMS through the crowd to get Johnson on a stretcher. He was then taken by ambulance to Dell Seton in critical condition where he later died from his injuries.
Witnesses told police that Marques had exchanged words with Marshall and a Caucasian male who were together. Following the argument, Marques turned and walked away. The two men followed Marques. The Caucasian male threw an object at Marques striking him. Marques stopped and turned to face the men when Marshall punched Marques who fell to the ground. Both men then fled.
