The ordinance went into effect April 26.
City Council adopted an ordinance at the April 26 meeting governing the commercial use of sidewalks and City right of way. The ordinance authorizes a citywide service license for dockless mobility operations, which includes dockless scooter and bicycle services.
The ordinance went into effect immediately and Austin Transportation is communicating to dockless mobility service operators that devices identified as being in violation of City Code will be subject to impoundment starting this weekend.
At the same time, Austin Transportation is working to establish the license and permitting process for these services as soon as administratively feasible. Austin Transportation will continue to work with operators, stakeholders and the public on next steps for the safe provision of dockless mobility services.
Austin Transportation will continue the community engagement process, leveraging the series of public engagement efforts that began with a community forum on April 4, 2018. This includes dockless mobility listening sessions throughout the community, with two more scheduled to take place this weekend.
More information about the public engagement meetings and feedback collected so far is available at AustinTexas.gov/DocklessMobility. This community feedback will inform the future of dockless mobility services in Austin.
