The Austin Police Department (APD) unveiled its newly designed PRIDE car during a news conference on June 30, 2021 at Rain on 4th St.

Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon and APD celebrate diversity within its ranks, and encourage all employees to live and serve as their authentic selves. We are privileged to serve Austin’s vibrant community and continue to make strides in being true public servants to all, including members of the LGBTQ+ Community.

The Austin Police Department continues to improve by building strong bridges with every segment of the community so no one ever feels they are not seen, heard or respected. In celebration of PRIDE month, the Department is unveiling a newly designed PRIDE car that represents all aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. The vehicle is wrapped in beautiful bright colors, featuring APD Safe Place and the NOH8 logos.

APD Safe Place's goal is to increase public trust in law enforcement and feelings of safety in the community. In 2018, the program expanded to include anyone who has been a victim of a bias crime.

In addition, a PRIDE patch and hat was created with the assistance of the Lesbian and Gay Peace Officers Association (LGPOA) and Cops for Charities (C4C). Chief Chacon authorized both sworn and civilian members of the Austin Police Department to wear the hat with their uniform for the month of June, and during the upcoming parade in August. APD is the first police department in the State of Texas to adopt a PRIDE patch.

The department would also like to remind anyone who is in Austin, either visiting, a resident, or just passing through that if you ever feel you are a victim of a hate crime, or have been targeted because of your individuality, you can go into many businesses in Austin who has partnered with APD to help keep you safe. Look for the Safe Place logo on participating businesses and seek shelter there. These businesses are safe havens where staff has been trained on what to do and can assist in keeping you safe.

APD will also celebrate with Austin and the State of Texas by participating in this year’s PRIDE Parade as we have for well over a decade.
