The Austin Police Department (APD) is continuing its investigation into the use of Level 1 less-lethal force during the first weekend of protests on May 30 and May 31, 2020. Staying consistent with our policy and practice on critical incidents, APD is identifying the officers involved in those incidents as:
- Officer Nicholas Gebhart, 7.5 years with APD
- Officer Kyu An, 3.5 years with APD
- Officer Kyle Felton, 1 year with APD
- Officer Derrick Lehman, 10 years with APD
- Officer John Siegel, 3.5 years with APD
All officers have been placed on paid administrative duty.
The APD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are attempting to identify the officer(s) involved in other protest-related incidents.
For reference, the APD response to resistance levels are divided into four categories: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. Each level is defined by the level of force used by the officer(s). A description of those levels is available in APD General Orders.
These cases remain under investigation. APD will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
