The South Congress Improvement Association (SCIA), in collaboration with the South Congress Merchants Association will be kicking off the holidays with a First Thursday Holiday Celebration "Tree Lighting" at Guero's Oak Garden at 1412 S Congress Ave. The holiday lighting will begin on Thursday, December 6th, from 6pm-11pm. The opening event will feature live music and business specials throughout the District.
This lighting will highlight the iconic pedestrian corridor of South Congress Avenue, a center for Austin’s small, local businesses who have hosted the monthly First Thursday event for many years. Businesses are excited to participate in this collaboration to enhance the streetscape for visitors and local residents throughout the holiday season.
The South Congress Merchants Association has been working with the City’s Economic Development Department, Souly Austin Program, as a collaborative partner for the last two years. “This project will help highlight the inviting streetscape for this iconic business district,” shared Nicole Klepado with the City of Austin. “This lighting will support the pedestrian-oriented installations merchants have identified as a key priority and major asset that sets apart their creative businesses and buildings famous to locals and visitors.”
“South Congress merchants are excited to get into the spirit of the holidays with a very special First Thursday that will have customers seeing shopping local along the Avenue in a whole new light!” shared Brandon Hodge, President of the South Congress Merchants Association and SCIA Board member.
The lighting will be followed by a Holiday market at Hotel San Jose at 1316 South Congress Ave. and The Church on Congress Avenue Christmas at 1511 South Congress Ave. on Saturday, December 8th.
Visitors can view the holiday lighting on South Congress from December 6th through December. This initiative reinforces the eclectic visual culture of the District, known for its distinctive building facades, iconic murals, and legacy businesses that are a vibrant part of Austin’s small business community.
