On Monday, December 17, 2018, the Austin Fire Department responded to a 911 call in the 7800 block of Epping Lane. Once on scene, firefighters observed a woman, Mary Beth Rohling, with severe burns to her body. EMS quickly responded and attempted to provide life-saving measures, but Rohling was ultimately pronounced deceased at 12:20 a.m.
 
APD homicide detectives responded to the scene where they spoke with witnesses and collected evidence including a video showing the victim intentionally setting herself alight. Rohling was alone at the time and there is no indication that there was anyone else involved in her death.
