Pre-programmed school zone flashers may not be working on holiday
Tomorrow drivers should use caution in school zones, as school will be in session but it is possible some of the school zone flashers could be off. Drivers should treat school zones with the same caution and follow the same lower speed limits during morning and afternoon commutes.
School zone flashers are pre-programmed to align with school schedules, and Presidents Day was originally scheduled to be a school holiday, so the flashers are programmed to be off. However, many schools will be in session tomorrow using the day as a make-up day due to the recent winter weather.
Crews are working today and through the night to re-schedule the flashers and there is a possibility they will not reach every signal. There are about 600 school zone flashers maintained by the Austin Transportation Department, and the majority of them have to be rescheduled manually in the in the field. Elementary Schools and Middle Schools are being prioritized for signal changes.
