Construction is in full swing on the Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk Trail Project and the City is asking for the public’s cooperation to ensure a safe operation. To build the overwater portions of the Trail, the City’s contractor will use a variety of heavy equipment including a large work barge, a service barge and several power boats. Over the next 15 months, construction areas along the south shore of the Lake will be busy. “We urge the public to stay at least 200 feet away from the barges and equipment for safety reasons,” says David Taylor, the City’s project manager. Construction areas, work dock and barges are closed to the public even when unoccupied.
The contractor has built a work dock and staging area in International Shores (Lakeshore) Park and will begin installing piers this week. Work will progress westward. Construction west of IH35 is not expected until late spring 2013.
The Lady Bird Lake and the Butler Hike and Bike Trails are expected to remain open throughout construction. The City will make accommodations for major boating events.
This project will construct a 1.2 mile long, mixed-use trail extension of the Butler Hike and Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake from International Shores Park off Lakeshore Boulevard and connecting to the existing trail at the Austin American-Statesman parking lot. The project is expected to be complete in 2014.
