We are proud to produce annual signature events and collaborations with Latino arts organizations. Our four annual signature events are Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz: A Tribute to Mexican Women in April, Award of Excellence in May, Viva Mexico in September and Día de los Muertos in late October or early November. All events are free and open to the public.

Oral History to Document the Latina/o Experience

This workshop is intended for beginner to advanced interviewers and videographers.
What will be covered:
What is the best equipment to use?
How to get your own project/collection started
Effective and gentle interviewing techniques
Including additional documentation in your interview
Why it’s crucial to deposit your interview at a library/archive
Why oral history is key to the Latina/o experience
Presented by: Voces Oral History Project Director Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, Comadres Founder and Voces volunteer Nora Comstock, and Voces videographer/photographer Gabriel Perez. Rivas-Rodriguez has more than 17 years of daily news experience, mostly as a reporter for the Boston Globe, WFAA-TV in Dallas and the Dallas Morning News. Her most recent professional work was for the Morning News state desk as bureau chief of the border bureau, based in El Paso, covering border states. She also was on the committee that organized and founded the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, of which she is a member of the Hall of Fame.

Join us on the last Tuesday of each month at the Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River St.) for a special screening from the Golden Era of Mexico’s cinema. Seniors will enjoy a healthy lunch immediately following the film.

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is a vibrant arts center with 100,000 annual visitors. Since 2007, we have been offering countless cultural events and art classes focusing on performing arts, music, literature, film screenings, and the Latino Arts Residency Program. A collaboration is a one-time presentation that is co-produced with the ESB-MACC. It can be a panel discussion, music or theatre presentation, film screenings or community engagement discussion. The ESB-MACC organizes year-round activities and also cooperates with a large number of partners who complete and strengthen programming through rentals and collaborations.
