On May 20th, 2015, City employees gathered at the Asian American Resource Center to participate in the 3rd annual Ethics Bowl. The Ethics Bowl is an educational experience, with two fundamental purposes, to engage employees in critical thinking and the development of ethical understanding and reasoning when faced with complex, ambiguous, and difficult to resolve issues.
Teams received a set of cases which raised issues in practical and professional ethics in advance of the competition and prepared an analysis of each case. At the competition, moderators posed questions, based on cases taken from those provided, to teams of three to four employees. Questions were focused on ethical problems on wide ranging topics.
In the end, a five way-tie occurred, as five of the teams won two of the three rounds they competed in. The final winners were determined by the point differential of each of those wins. First place went to Municipal Court (Team #2) second place went to Parks and Recreation and third place went to Human Resources. Austin Water Utility and Communications and Technology Management tied for fourth place.
Winning team members include from left to right, Juli Morrison, Brydan McNeely, Rachel Clarkson and Louis (Sonny) Castillo.
Special thanks to Assistant City Manager, Rey Arellano, for attending and addressing all attendees. We would also like to extend our thanks to the special guest judges, members of the City Auditor's Office as well as members of the Law Department who assisted and oversaw the competition. Well done and thank you to all team coaches and team participants who did an exceptional job in this challenging yet fun event!
