Zach Scott Street (Airport Boulevard to Berkman Drive) and Schieffer Avenue (Vineland Drive to Airport Boulevard)
The Austin Transportation Department is implementing planned improvements to Zach Scott Street from Airport Boulevard to Berkman Drive, and Schieffer Avenue from Vineland Drive to Airport Boulevard. Based on feedback Austin Transportation received at its public open house on Aug. 8, 2018, and other citizen communications, the department was able to identify high-priority issues and formulate a plan intended to address these issues. Funding has been identified from the 2016 Mobility Bond Bikeways Program to complete this project.
Timeline (updated June 2019):
Construction on intersection improvements at Zach Scott Street and Berkman Drive is now complete.
Construction on intersection improvements at Zach Scott Street and Airport Boulevard is almost complete. Remaining striping and bicycle signal work will be completed this summer.
Roadway striping installation on Zach Scott Street between Airport Boulevard and Berkman Drive, and on Schieffer Avenue between Vineland Drive and Airport Boulevard is complete.
Planned improvements include:
Zach Scott Street (Airport Boulevard to Berkman Drive) – The plan includes a two-way protected bikeway on the north side of the street, joining the existing two-way protected bikeway on Zach Scott Street, east of Berkman Drive. Additional improvements include improving sight lines at alleys and intersections and improving the trail crossing near Tom Miller Street. In order to make room for these improvements, on-street motor vehicle parking will be consolidated to the south side of the street between Tom Miller Street and Camacho Street and between Threadgill Street and Berkman Drive. The majority of on-street parking spaces will remain between Camacho Street and Threadgill Street. The intersections of Airport Boulevard and Berkman Drive are planned to be upgraded to protected intersections to improve safety for everyone.
Schieffer Avenue (Vineland Drive to Airport Boulevard) – The plan includes extending the two-way protected bikeway from Zach Scott Street across Airport Boulevard, and onto Schieffer Avenue, where it will end just east of Vineland Drive, and transition into a quiet neighborhood street. Parking will be consolidated to the south side of Schieffer Avenue between Airport Boulevard and Vineland Drive in order to make room for the two-way bikeway and to improve visibility at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and Schieffer Avenue. On-street parking will remain available on the south side of Schieffer Avenue.
Additionally, Austin Transportation and Catellus, the master developer of the Mueller community, are exploring a partnership to upgrade the striped bicycle facilities to include raised curb protections. If this partnership reaches an agreement, these upgrades would be constructed later in 2019.
