History:
The hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake was part of the vision of Lady Bird Johnson and other community leaders who led efforts to beautify the shores of Austin's central city lake.
In 2007 the Trail Foundation, with private funding, completed the Riverside Boardwalk Investment Study. The study provided a comprehensive analysis of the issues and opportunities in closing the 1.2 mile gap in the hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake.
In the spring of 2008 the Austin City Council appropriated funds for preliminary design, engineering and public involvement for the Boardwalk Trail at Lady Bird Lake. The Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Department have engaged Jacobs Engineering Group as the professional consultant to complete the design.
