Alderbrook Pocket Park is an undeveloped park, which has received funding from PARD and Austin Parks Foundation to develop a playground area which will include a traditional playcape, boulders, a pavilion, and nature play features.

Project Background

Since 2010, APF has been working with the Friends of Alderbrook to build Alderbrook Park (12444 Lamplight Village Ave.). The surrounding neighborhood had been designated high-need by PARD, and had no local park or walking trails. Community members advocated to turn a vacant lot into a park, and explicitly requested a playground, trails, benches, tables, signage, and ongoing maintenance of their butterfly garden.

APF’s relationship with the park began with a partnership with the LBJ Wildflower Center to install Harbiturf, a native grass mix that would provide low-maintenance turf to the empty field. Next, the group received a $50,000 ACL Music Festival grant to install trees and a walking trail.

In September of 2018, The Friends of Alderbrook Park applied for Detailed Park Design Assistance. APF awarded this design service to develop plans and a cost estimate for the playground and picnic area that was called out in the Vision Plan developed by PARD. The plan and associated costing was developed with community input and completed in June 2019.

In 2020, APF further awarded Friends of Alderbrook Park a $100,000 grant to support the park playground project, and we are pleased that Alderbrook Park will have a playground in Fall 2021, which will include a traditional playscape, boulders, a pavilion, and nature play elements.

Alderbrook Park has also received $355,869 in Parkland Dedication funding from the City, and $2,500 from Friends of Alderbrook.

Project Summary
