Hancock Golf Course

Founded in 1899 by Lewis Hancock Jr., former mayor of Austin from 1895-1897, the Hancock Golf Course stands today as one of the oldest golf courses in the state of Texas. Although the course was re-named after Mr. Hancock in 1946, it was the original site of the Austin Country Club. At one time, the course maintained sand greens and 18 holes.

Today, Hancock Golf Course is located in the heart of Austin; this par 35, 9-hole course carries up and down hills and over beautiful Waller Creek. The old course is relatively short by modern standards, featuring small, well-manicured greens typical of the era in which it was built.

Noted Austin player and teacher, Harvey Penick, started his professional career as a caddy at this location of Austin Country Club and remained with the club for over 70 years. Penick was the golf coach at the University of Texas at Austin from 1931 to 1963, coaching the Longhorns to 21 Southwest Conference championships in 33 years.

Jimmy Clay Golf Course

The Jimmy Clay Golf Course was constructed and opened in 1974; designed by noted golf course architect Joe Finger. Located in Southeast Austin and surrounded by Williamson Creek, the course plays 6,918 yards through traditional tree-lined fairways and elevated open greens.

In 2007, Jimmy Clay underwent major renovations of three holes that were redesigned to include a challenging water feature near an island green. During that time, all of the greens were replanted and bunkers completely rebuilt.

In 2015 a second renovation was completed which included the reshaping of four of the greens to further improve conditions and playability. The driving range was also enlarged and reshaped with larger targets and landing areas, and featuring a new elevated hitting area for better visibility; creating a premier practice facility for golf patrons.

The Jimmy Clay Golf Course became part of a 36-hole complex with the addition of the Roy Kizer Golf Course in 1994. Together, the two courses make up one of the finest and diverse 36 hole public complexes in the state.

Lions Municipal Golf Course

Lions Municipal Golf Course has served its citizens since 1934 and has long been one of the City's most popular courses. Constructed originally by the Lions Club in 1928, Lions has hosted many notable golfers, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and, of course, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.  Lions also hosts Texas' oldest amateur golf tournament, the Firecracker Open.

Lions was recently added to the Registration of National Historical Places by the National Park Service, recognized as one of the first courses in the South to desegregate prior to the Supreme Court decision in Brown V. Board of Education in 1954.

While "Old Muni" has changed over the years, it remains a quality test to Austin's most loyal golf customers.

History

Morris Williams Golf Course opened in 1964 as Austin's third municipal course. Designed by Leon Howard, one of the most prolific golf course architects of the time, the course features elevated, contoured greens and rolling terrain.

Named after Morris Williams Jr., one of the best golfers ever developed in Austin.  Morris Williams Jr. won every trophy available to him in the Austin Area; from the Texas Junior Championships to the National Air Force Trophy, now named in his honor. He lost his life as a young man during the Korean war in a jet plane crash in Florida. The City of Austin Golf Division is proud to have his name in our history books and on our score cards.

This golf course once served as the home for the University of Texas golf teams under legendary coaches Harvey Penick and George Hannon. During this time, the University won 2 NCAA Championships with teams that featured Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.
