The Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities has three very active sub committees:

  • The Access and Public Policy Committee
  • The Awards and Outreach Committee
  • The Education and Employment Committee


Access and Public Policy Committee

Members of the Access and Public Policy Committee participate on a variety of city-sponsored task forces, advocating for citizens and visitors with disabilities. Additionally, the committee educates the community on the importance of accessible parking, including accessible parking laws and regulations. The committee currently is involved with the Travis County Constable Precinct 5 Disabled Parking Enforcement Program. The committee has established an advisory relationship with the Parks and Recreation ADA Transition Planning Committee. The committee provides regular feedback to the Public works Sidewalk Program regarding the development of the 2016 Sidewalk Master Plan. The Access and Public Policy Committee works with the city’s Homeland Security Emergency Management Department to insure that plans and training include assistance to persons with disabilities. Finally, the committee monitors access to safe and affordable transportation for people with disabilities. Members invite Capital Metro staff to provide updates and to offer constructive feedback regarding public transportation in Austin.

Awards and Outreach Committee

The Awards and Outreach Committee has established several awards that recognize local businesses, individuals and organizations for their fair and equitable treatment of persons with disabilities in Austin. The Access Award recognizes Austin businesses for their accessibility and welcoming attitude towards people with disabilities. The Employment Award Program recognizes employers, both public and private, that hires and retains workers with disabilities. The White Cane Day Celebration works with other community organization to organize, promote, and conduct activities associated with White Cane Day. Activities include a gathering at Austin City Hall for the reading of a proclamation by the Mayor followed by a “white cane” walk to a local park to celebrate the day.

Nominate a Local Employer for the Disabilities Employment Award

Education and Employment Committee

The Employment and Education Committee participates in the organization and activities associated with Disability Mentoring Day (DMD). DMD is a day devoted to the mentoring of young job-seekers with disabilities. Participants are paired with local workers and spend the day job shadowing and learning about the various tasks that Austin workers perform. The day ends with a luncheon and celebration of all participants and mentors. The committee works with partner agencies to host the Business of Work Job Readiness Seminar, designed to assist persons with disabilities to improve their job-seeking skills. Participants are provided workshops in successful interviewing skills, effective resume writing, and dressing for success. Additionally, the committee provides feedback to improve features of the Work-Based Learning Summer youth Employment Program, designed to allow youth to be employed in summer youth paid internships to gain valuable work experience.
