Small businesses throughout Austin are invited to the March 2018 event.
Small businesses throughout Austin are invited to the Alibaba LIVE Midnight Pitch Event on March 12, 2018 in Austin, Texas to explore the enormous Chinese market that yields 60,000 daily visitors.
Austin’s small businesses will have an opportunity to launch their brands with Alibaba, the world’s largest e-commerce company. The live midnight pitch event will help connect Texas brands to thousands of Chinese retailers on Taobao Global, Alibaba’s international exporting solution that allows businesses from outside of China to reach Chinese consumers via buying agents.
The event builds on the success of the 1st U.S. live event with Alibaba that happened in Austin, TX earlier this year. At that event eleven Austin companies pitched their products to thousands of Alibaba TaoBao shop owners who watched the event and dubbed it “retail-tainment” because of the live music commercial breaks and cultural context provided to viewers. Five companies were offered deals by TaoBao shop owners, but each experienced barriers to entry into the Chinese market. This time around Austin businesses will be coached by export experts before the pitch event occurs to ensure fit and feasibility of importing their products into China. This is a valuable service provided by Alibaba and the City of Austin to ensure Austin businesses are set up and protected for international expansion.
The goals for the Alibaba: LIVE Midnight Pitch Event are to increase visibility of Austin brands, give businesses a chance to explore the Chinese consumer market without the expense of flying to tradeshows in China and meeting buyers one-on-one. Best case scenario we will see Austin businesses actually close deals with TaoBao shop owners, but the experience of pitching to such a large audience is benefit alone.
Former participant and Austin business owner, Polly Glasse of SkiNourishment, had this to say about the opportunity, “This event is so different from other events I’ve attended for small businesses. First, local small businesses are given this opportunity rather than ..large businesses and second, .. it is live streamed. Who’s ever done that? I have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to go over there [China] to sell and it’s very expensive. So to have this opportunity with Alibaba connecting with the small businesses of Austin, Texas is amazing!”
Alibaba Group is the world’s largest e-commerce company with the mission to make it easy to do business anywhere. It is a gateway to China’s large and growing middle class of more than 300 million consumers -- expected to grow to 500 million in next 5 years.
Selected brands will do a 5-10 minute live pitch to Taobao Global buying agents who will quickly select the products they are most interested in.
