Participants pay tribute during climb at Tower of the Americas.
On Monday, September 11, 2017, Austin Police Officers honored fallen 9/11 heroes by participating in the San Antonio 110 floor 9/11 Memorial Climb (SA110) at The Tower of the Americas. The 110 Memorial Climb, which is held at locations throughout the Country, was created to pay tribute to 343 fallen NYFD Firefighters. The SA110 is unique because it also pays tribute to 70 fallen Law Enforcement Officers and nine fallen Emergency Medical Services personnel who perished at Ground Zero.
SA110 participants climbed the stairs twice at The Tower of the Americas to reach (and actually exceed) the 110 floors of the World Trade Center. Each participant carried an accountability tag around their neck with the name and photo of a fallen hero. With their climbs complete, each participant rang a bell and placed the tag on a tribute board – an action that symbolized that every fallen hero has been accounted for. Once at the base of the Tower again, participants signed the name of the first responder they honored on the Remembrance Flag.
Today, APD officers carried 12 of the 70 tags for fallen 9/11 Law Enforcement Officers.
