The Austin Police Department (APD) Robbery Unit arrested six juveniles connected to Aggravated Robbery Series #17. The robberies began on Saturday, March 4, 2023, and continued through Sunday night, March 5. Officers responded to nine aggravated robberies, resulting in 22 reported victims. In several of the cases, shots were fired. In one incident, a victim was shot. At this time, the victim is in stable condition.
On Monday, March 6, officers located one of the suspect vehicles observed on surveillance video at one of the robberies. The officer determined that this vehicle was reported stolen and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver kept going and would not stop for officers. Two people got out of the car in the area of Montopolis Drive and Fairway Street. Officers arrested one of these suspects and located pieces of clothing and property seen on surveillance at one of the robberies. Officers also detained and arrested the driver of the stolen vehicle. Both suspects were identified as juveniles.
Later that day, Violent Crimes Task Force members were surveilling the area where another stolen vehicle used in the robberies was located. Officers observed one of the suspects of the robberies enter two stolen vehicles; one had been used as a getaway car in the robbery series, and the other was stolen during one of the robberies. Officers arrested the suspect and three others who were riding in those vehicles. Stolen property was located within the vehicle. All four suspects were arrested.
A search warrant was executed at the residence of one of the suspects. There, officers located stolen property and clothing worn in the robberies.
As a result of the investigation, one juvenile suspect has been charged for participating in all of the robberies, and the other five juvenile suspects face the charges listed above.
A number of the suspects were found to have conditions of release through the Juvenile Court system for prior offenses. The investigation continues, and additional charges will be forthcoming.
**The APD Robbery Unit wants to remind the community to be aware of their surroundings. It should also be noted that quality surveillance systems paired with cooperative business owners assisted in identifying these suspects quickly, which prevented further violence. We would like to thank the community members that provided surveillance footage or witness statements**
