AUSTIN, TX – The City of Austin Economic Development Department and the United States (U.S.) Embassy in Cairo, Egypt have partnered on an international exchange program for fashion designers in Austin and Egypt. Made possible through a $231,000 federal grant from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, ATX+EGYPT selected businesses will participate in a year-long business development and cultural exchange to grow within the fashion industry.
Following a successful first edition of the entrepreneurship partnership between the City of Austin and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo in 2019, ATX+EGYPT supports the development and global expansion of Austin-based businesses. The program also increases exposure of emerging Egyptian businesses to Austin and the United States.
“ATX+EGYPT empowers our local fashion designers to not only thrive in Austin’s $86 million fashion industry, but also to prepare for the global $1.5 trillion fashion marketplace,” notes Sylnovia Holt Rabb, Acting Director of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. “We look forward to leveraging our global networks for economic prosperity in Austin’s growing fashion sector, and we are excited to provide fashion designers from Cairo with an opportunity to access the U.S. market.”
The first phase of the program is virtual and occurs December 2020 to April 2021. Through a partnership with the Austin Community College Fashion Incubator, the program will offer a virtual education series on topics ranging from fashion management to entrepreneurship. The series will prepare fashion designers for domestic and global growth opportunities.
The second phase of the program is an in-person exchange between Austin and Cairo participants in each city and occurs October 2021 to December 2021. These international exchanges are an opportunity for designers to introduce their products to new markets, to gain valuable insights from consumers and manufacturers, and to learn from direct interactions with international designers.
