Deep Eddy Pool opening at 6 a.m. to accommodate early swimmers.
Barton Springs Pool will remain closed for repairs to address two large holes that formed in the pool’s infrastructure.
Multiple City of Austin departments worked over the Labor Day weekend to address repairs at Barton Springs Pool. Two holes in an abandoned skimmer pipe, estimated to be from the 1940s, were pulling water into an abandoned pipe below the pool’s dam and creating a safety hazard. City staff worked together to temporarily reduce the water loss. Now, the departments are collaborating on repairs to provide a more permanent solution.
Pool visitor safety is a top priority for the City, and the damages created conditions that pose a significant safety risk, up to and including loss of life. City engineering staff are working to develop a long-term solution that accounts for environmental issues, protection of endangered species, as well as public safety. To properly address issues from the abandoned pipe, Barton Springs Pool will remain closed until thorough repairs can be made. Work will likely take several weeks to complete. Timelines may be adjusted depending on how conditions evolve during the repair process. City staff will provide periodic public updates as the operation proceeds.
Visitors of the area below Barton Springs Pool dam, also known as “Barking Springs,” should avoid cordoned-off areas. Additional space may be needed for crews to make necessary repairs.
"Barton Springs Pool is Austin's crown jewel and we want nothing more than to make the repairs quickly and safely. As we learn more about the timeline for repairs, we'll keep all residents up to date,” said Interim Parks and Recreation Director, Angela Means.
Deep Eddy Pool will open daily at 6:00 a.m. while Barton Springs Pool undergoes repairs. For a full list of available pools to use while Barton Springs Pool is closed, visit austintexas.gov/pools.
