The Greater East Austin Youth Association (GEAYA), in co-sponsorship with the City of Austin, is holding the Central Texas Juneteenth Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The parade begins at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Salina Street and travels down Chicon Street to Rosewood Avenue where it ends at Rosewood Park. The parade is followed by a day of activities at Rosewood and Boggy Creek Park areas with food, marketplace vendors, live musical performances, and a children's entertainment zone with games and prizes.
“Austin's historical Juneteenth Celebration remains an important time that we come together to celebrate the African American journey to freedom,” said Tami D. Johnson-Dawson, Juneteenth Chair with GEAYA. “We recognize this time together as empowering and uplifting and it really feels like one big family reunion! May we never forget the injustices that we have overcome from the enslavement of our ancestors and remember that none of us is free unless we are all free.”
Since 2003, the GEAYA and the City have partnered to support Juneteenth celebrations including the parade and festivities in Rosewood Park. This year’s theme is “Each One, Teach One” as we celebrate the sharing of knowledge, power of education, our collective courage and resilience, and knowing our history.
