On Sunday, August 23, 2020, at approximately 3:57 p.m., Austin police responded to the an auto vs. pedestrian crash in the 3900 block of S. Lamar Blvd. A 2016 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound on S. Lamar Blvd. approaching an intersection controlled by a traffic control device. A vehicle was stopped in the left turn lane at a red light. The driver of the Toyota swerved left of the stopped vehicle, going onto the center cement median that divides north and southbound traffic on Lamar Blvd. The driver of the Toyota struck a pedestrian on the center median and continued travelling southbound before coming to rest.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. The passenger in the Toyota did not sustain any injuries. The driver of the Toyota was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

This is Austin’s 54th fatal traffic crash of 2020, resulting in 59 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, there were 52 traffic fatalities.
